The original 20 episodes of the Keystone Cops were filmed in the Town of Islip, in and around the Keystone Building in Bayshore. Filming started in 1915. As the writers were in Suffolk County, much of their inspiration came from observing the police in Suffolk County. Policemen from Suffolk County were often present during filming and they would offer to be extras in the films. The movie makers would observe the police in Sayville and get ideas. Sayville was the main area for hotels and a good entertainment area since there were theatres. The actors would flock there.
When the Keystone Cops were filmed there was no actual official Suffolk County Police Department, but instead village, town, and state police. The reason why Keystone Studios chose the south shore of the Town of Islip was because Long Island was the only land facing the south to the ocean it got the most light. This need for good lighting for early films is the same reason why there was so many glass house farms on the south shore.
