The fictional town of "Amity Island" in the book "Jaws" is a composite of several south shore Suffolk County seaside communities. "Amity Island" is mainly based on Amagansett, but the book uses other several communities to make the composite, such as Amityville, Fire Island, and Sayville.
Amagansett comes from the exploits of Captain Frank Mundus who caught many large sharks off the coast of Suffolk County, Long Island. Amityville was used because, since the village in the book was fictional, Peter Benchley could not call it Amagansett, so he had to use the name of the only other south shore seaside village that started with an A. Fire Island is the island with no bridge to it that provided the "island' part. But what about the place across the bay that people came to the island from by ferry? That place is based on Sayville. The communities on Fire Island that are known by the world are the ones in the middle, such as Cherry Grove, the Pines, and of the course the Sunken Forest National Park. Almost every book written about Fire Island were about those area, and it is the area of Fire Island that people travel to go to. That is why Sayville was selected by Benchley for part of the composite.
Peter Benchley spoke in an interview about the exploits of Captain Frank Mandus, who he was made into Captain Quint in the book. Off the coast of Amagansett Mundus caught a huge Shark. Later, in the same general area he caught a shark that was 4500 pounds. What impressed Benchley and inspired the book was Mandus caught a huge shark in relatively shallow water, within sight of bathers. An interesting fact is that early in the 20th century the then world's largest shark was brought into Sayville after being caught, and hung up on a dock in the village.
